Artist
such as Juan Cruz, Jimmie Durham, Lucy Gunning,
Mike Nelson, Matthew Tickle and Richard
Wilson, have all exhibited here, and their
calibre reflects this independent gallery's
enormous reputation. Director Robin Klassnik
actively offers artists the "space and time
to develop new ideas and ways of working".
This
has resulted in some magnificent shows most
notably by Mike Nelson who turns the gallery
into dysfunctional, obsessive collections
of weird objects. Nelson's shows are typical
of a gallery that really invites artists
to work directly with the space. By inviting
artists to produce site-specific works,
Matt's Gallery is not just a space to view
art, but has itself, become a continuous
work of art. Ideas such as this have been
attempted, but none so long running and
committed to the concept. One of London's
most important spaces.
