One
of a number of alternative galleries in
south east London, the Hales Gallery was
opened in 1992. The café on the ground floor
partly funds the idiosyncratic gallery in
the basement. A number of emerging artists
have exhibited in the gallery - the most
well known being Tomoko Takahashi, shortlisted
for the Turner Prize in 2000. The fact that
Takahashi has emerged from the gallery alone
is enough to suggest that the directors
have an eye for young talent. Definitely
an alternative space to keep an eye on.
