Flowers
East is a large gallery founded by Angela
Flowers and located in Hackney in the East
End of London. Flowers has been running
a gallery since 1970 and many of her best
artists come from this neglected period
of British art history. The Flowers Empire
is an expanding one with an outpost (Flowers
West) in Los Angeles and the imaginatively
titled Flowers Central which has recently
opened up in Victoria Miro's old space in
Cork Street.
Now
run by Angela Flowers son, Matthew Flowers,
the gallery is outside the circuit of London's
more trendy contemporary art followers largely
because of its old-fashioned commitment
to figurative and expressionist painting.
Despite being occasionally mocked for showing
middle-of-the-road, uninteresting art, there
is no doubt that the Flowers Empire is raking
in the cash, unlike some of its more fashionable
counterparts. Don't expect to see any of
its artists winning the Turner but do expect
them to show up in boardrooms up and down
both the countries .
