non-profit space was founded in 1986 in the
heart of London's East End and is today widely
recognised as being one of the most important
independent spaces in the country. |

Over the years the Chisenhale has gained
a reputation for giving shows both to unknowns
as well the newly-famous, all of whom have
had to face the daunting task of filling
its cavernous interior. Exhibitions have
varied from British artists to international
artists as well as group shows. The Chisenhale
also has a yearly series of shows devoted
to new work by unknown artists every summer.
Via a lottery funded education programme
they have brought art into the local community
and surrounding schools in a bid to take
the elitism out of art and to involve those
who would normally shun away from it. In
addition to their 2500 square foot space
the Chisenhale has recently moved into virtual
space with their internet space 'ch2'. It's
first show by Tomoko Takahashi of a dysfunctional
word processor helped land that artist her
Turner nomination in 2000.
